Minimum efficiency reporting value, commonly known as MERV rating, is a measurement scale designed in 1987 by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to rate the effectiveness of air filters. MERV values vary from 1 to 16. The higher the MERV value is the more efficient the filter will be in trapping airborne particles.

Permanent Filter Questions:

We do not recommend using a metal mesh style filter in a residential furnace application, because they are not a sufficient efficiency level. According to NAFA (National Air Filtration Association), the minimum efficiency rating for residential applications is MERV 6. Our pleated disposable filters are rated at MERV 8, and are designed for this application. The metal mesh washable style filters will be less efficient, normally rated at MERV 4, and are designed for other types of applications.

There are several ways to clean metal filters and will depend on the type of filter.

Metal Mesh Style:

  • They can be blown out with an air compressor.
  • They can be washed out with a hose or a pressure washer.
    • For foam type filters, make sure they are dry before installing them back in the application.
  • Soap and water or cleaning agents may be used in cases of excess grime or grease trapped on the filters.
    • Make sure that cleaning agents being used are compatible with the material of the filter.

Grease Baffle Style:

  • They can be washed out with a hose or a pressure washer.
  • They can be run through the dishwasher.
  • Soap and water or cleaning agents may be used in cases of excess grease trapped on the filters.
    • Make sure that cleaning agents being used are compatible with the material of the filter.

Yes, we recommend using filter spray with the metal mesh type filters. Adding a light layer of the filter spray on a new filter, and after every wash, will increase the initial dust holding capacity of the filter. You can find our filter spray on our products tab, or click here.

Type 430 steel is a less expensive grade of stainless steel that is somewhat difficult to form and weld. Type 304 steel is easier to form and weld than 430 stainless steel. Type 430 stainless steel is made up of 17 percent chromium and 0.12 percent carbon, while 304 stainless steel contains 18 percent chromium and 0.08 percent carbon. Type 430 stainless steel is ideal in the production of automotive trim, the insides of clothes dryers and dishwashers. Manufacturers use 304 stainless steel in the production of kitchen sinks, counter tops, food processing equipment and other equipment regularly exposed to corrosive environments.

Disposable Filter Questions:

According to NAFA (National Air Filtration Association), the minimum efficiency rating for residential applications is MERV 6. Our standard pleated filters are rated at MERV 8, and are designed for most furnace applications. If you have a newer geothermal unit, they can take higher efficiency filters. We make MERV 12 and MERV 13 pleated filters for these applications.

Yes, we carry bottlecap for backing on our disposable filters. All standard sizes come in a die-cut frame. There will be an additional charge for bottlecap on custom sizes. If we do see fit for bottlecap we will apply bottlecap when needed without an additional charge.
